Summer is almost here. At this time of year it is very important to remember our pet's safety as we enjoy the summer sun.
If your dog is anything like mine, than they are always wanting to go for rides in the car. As tempting as that is, in the summer this is not always a good idea. This might be a good time to hire a dog walker or pet sitter to give your dog the attention they need when you are going to be gone for extended periods of time.
Every year thousands of dogs die in cars from overheating. It takes 15 minutes for the car to raise to deadly temperatures for your dog. Some people attempt to help their dog by cracking the window. This is inadequate and could have deadly results. Others leave the window open all the way. Although this is better, the temperatures in the cars do raise to extremely high temperatures. Plus, you have the added danger of your dog jumping out of the car and getting injured or lost. Do your part to help prevent these unnecessary deaths to dogs. Not only keep your pets safe, but if you see another animal in danger. Report it immediately to the police and try to locate the owner. Don't feel like you are overreacting. These deaths are preventable. The Dogs can't save themselves, they need our help.
Another Safety concern for animals in the summer is hot pavement. Many animals burn their paws on the hot asphalt. As you take your dog for those summertime walks. Pay attention to the temperature of the asphalt. They don't have shoes to protect their feet. If you see them limping or avoiding the pavement these are cues that it might be too hot. Check their paws for blisters and double check the temperature of the pavement.
Dehydration is an additional concern for pet safety in the summer. At home provide extra water bowls and fill them often. When you go for hikes and outings, always remember to bring water for both you and your pets. Most pet stores sell portable water bowls that can come in handy for this purpose.
Enjoy the Summer Sun! But keep our pets safe!!!
